SALT LAKE CITY--The Utah softball team kicks off its 2003-04 campaign with a fall ball warm-up starting today. The team, which returns six starters and 12 letterwinners from a season ago, will host two tournaments while traveling to another. The autumn season concludes on Sept. 28.
Key returners for Utah include career-home run leader Melissa Stahnke and all-Mountain West Conference performers Glennis Donnelly and Lynsey Wall. Rounding out the returning starters are Bryanne Durrence, Ivette Hernandez and Jackie Wong. Also returning for the Utes are pitchers Heather Bowlin and Brianna Gourdin.
The Utes welcome four newcomers this year in catcher/first baseman Kate Nygaard, pitcher Melissa Oaks, utility player Devina Quintero and pitcher/first baseman Samantha Schroeder. Oaks, Quintero and Schroeder hail from California, while Nygaard is a local product out of Cottonwood High School and Salt Lake Community College.
Head Coach Mona Stevens (Utah '81) returns for her eighth season at the helm of the Utah softball program. The former Ute and now coach has posted a 237-177-1 (.747) record during her seven seasons at Utah. Joining Stevens in the dugout are Marianne Bullis (Utah '98) and Kelly Ferguson (Texas A&M '02). This is Bullis' second season with Utah and Ferguson's first.
"We are really excited to take the field again. There is a positive atmosphere and a lot of enthusiasm with this team. We just can't wait to get this car on the road and see what she can do," said Stevens.
