SALT LAKE CITY - The University of Utah ski team will team up with Olympians and community volunteers to mentor at-risk youth through cross country skiing, this Friday, Jan. 30, from 1:30-3:00 p.m. at Mountain Dell Golf Course, just off Interstate 80 in Parley's Canyon.
Sponsored by Salt Lake City and County, the program offers mentoring and instruction from NCAA defending national champion Ute ski team along with former Olympic Athletes John Aalberg and Laurie Humbert. Other volunteer instructors are provided by The Utah Nordic Alliance (TUNA), a nonprofit organization that maintains the 7-kilometer track at Mountain Dell Golf Course for this program as well as for community skiing and racing.
"It's a program which we hope is changing these kid's lives," said TUNA Coordinator Tim Metos. "Besides the obvious health benefits, it gives them a chance to learn this sport from some of the best skiers in the world at no cost to them." Equipment for the program is being provided free of charge by Wild Rose Sports and Rossignol Ski Company.
There will be photos and interview opportunities with the children as well as University of Utah ski team members, John Aalberg and Laurie Humbert.
