THIS WEEK:
The University of Utah women's tennis team opens its season against three non-conference opponents this weekend at the Boise State Invitational in Boise, Idaho. The Utes take on Cal State Northridge Friday, Jan. 30 at 10:00 a.m. Competition continues on Saturday, Jan. 31 against the University of Idaho and concludes Sunday, Feb. 1 with a match against Boise State.
REVIEWING LAST SEASON:
Last year, the Utes placed seventh in the Mountain West Conference with a 1-6 mark. Utah finished the season with an overall record of 7-16. As a junior last year, Sheri Esrock finished with the best singles record on the team 15-13. Rachel Alder joined the team as a junior last year and played mainly at the No. 4 spot. Allison Hansen, who was a sophomore last year, played mostly at the No. 5 spot and had a 14-16 singles record, which was the second best on the team.
UTE NEWCOMERS:
Utah made five additions to the roster this year. Freshmen Whitney Eber, Cinthia Saucedo, Jessica Watts, Ashley Young and sophomore transfer Jenessa Jackson join Megan Dorny and the Utes.
SCOUTING THE OPPONENTS:
Cal State Northridge will open its season at the Boise Invitational. The Matadors are currently ranked 74.
The Idaho Vandals began their season with a win at home (4-3) against Lewis-Clark State College on Jan. 21. They compiled wins from five of the seven singles spots. The Vandals beat the University of Portland (4-3) in their second match of the season but lost to No. 7 University of Washington (7-0) last week.
Boise State opened its season last Friday against BYU in Provo. The #59 ranked Broncos fell to the # 45 Cougars.
QUOTING HEAD COACH Megan Dorny:
"We are looking forward to the weekend as we open up our season against Cal. St. Northridge, U of Idaho, and Boise St. This weekend will be a great opportunity to prove that, although young, this team has a lot of talent and ambition. We will be playing two ranked teams in #59 Boise and #74 Cal St. Northridge, which will be a good test for this young team. We will likely be playing w/out Ashley Young due to an arm injury, who is expected to play high in our singles line-up when she does get cleared to play."
