KNOXVILLE, Tenn. -
The Football Writers Association announced that Utah freshman defensive back Eric Weddle has been named to the Scripps/FWAA Freshman All-America Team. Weddle played in all 12 games and started the last nine at cornerback for Utah's 10-2, Mountain West Conference and Liberty Bowl championship team.
Weddle established himself as one of the hardest hitters in the league, as well as a great cover man. He tied for the Mountain West Conference lead with four forced fumbles and he led Utah with three interceptions. Weddle, one of 13 true freshmen named to the Scripps/FWAA All-America team, had 60 total tackles and four sacks (second on the team).
He was previously named a second-team Freshman All-American by The Sporting News and was an honorable mention all-MWC choice.
More than 70 players were nominated to the 11-member committee, which was comprised of media representatives from every NCAA Division I-A football conference.
