LAS VEGAS, Nev.-It was a gorgeous Sunday for softball as Utah concluded the UNLV Softball Classic with a 10-2 victory to UC Riverside. The Utes wrap up the tourney with a 2-3 record-with all of the losses being to ranked opponents-and are now 5-4 overall.
The Highlanders put numbers on the board first after Melissa Sanchez knocked a two-run home run to center field in the top of the first. Utah would answer in the latter of the inning with five runs of its own. Leadoff batter Lynsey Wall drew a walk and then advanced on an infield single by Jackie Wong. Both batters would cross the plate after Glennis Donnelly laced a double to the hole in right center. The next batter Melissa Stahnke would single to the same spot, advancing Donnelly to third. Donnelly would score and Stahnke would move to second when Devina Quintero grounded out to second making it 3-1. After Stahnke stole third and Ivette Hernandez and Kate Nygaard drew walks, the pitcher Brianna Gourdin helped herself with a double to left center to score Stahnke and Hernandez. Utah ended the inning with five runs off four hits, but did strand two.
The bottom of the fourth saw Utah produce five more runs to make it a 10-2 margin. The Highlanders committed four errors in the inning including one to put the inning's leadoff batter, Wong, on base. Donnelly would then double to left, which would advance Wong to third. Utah's next batter, Stahnke, would strikeout, but reach first on a dropped ball and throwing error by the catcher. Donnelly and Wong would score on the play and Stahnke would reach second and then third on another throwing error by the catcher. With a 7-2 lead and a runner on third, Hernandez would single in Stahnke and increase the score to 8-2. Amy Alvord checked into the game to pinch run for Hernandez, and went on to score off a home run by Kate Nygaard. The homer put Utah up 10-2, a lead the Utes would hold in the top of the fifth to make the mercy rule in effect.
Brianna Gourdin picks up her third win of the year. Gourdin settled down after giving up the home run in the first-both runs were unearned because of a Ute error. She would only allow one more hit in the game. The sophomore struck out four and allowed no walks.
