HONOLULU, Hawaii--The Utah softball team fell to No. 3 California, 8-3, at the Hawaii Invitational on Thursday. Utah (7-16) faces Hawaii later today.
The Utes were able to score three runs on the Golden Bears, but poor defense gave the game away for Utah. The Ute pitchers allowed eight runs, but only three of those were earned. Overall, Utah made five errors in the game which led to the five unearned runs.
Cal took over the game early, scoring seven runs in the first three innings of play. Utah would cut the lead to 7-3 in the top of the sixth. The first two runs came from a long ball by Glennis Donnelly and the final run from a Golden Bear error. Cal would then add another run in the latter of the inning.
Freshman Melissa Oakes was the losing pitcher. Oakes (0-5) allowed seven runs (two earned) off eight hits through three innings. Heather Bowlin would throw the other three innings. The senior allowed one run off three hits in her time in the circle.
