At The Plate
Utah travels to San Diego, Calif., for a league doubleheader versus San Diego State on Friday, May 7 beginning at 1:00 p.m. (PT). The Utes then face UNLV in Las Vegas, Nev., on Saturday, May 8 at 2:00 p.m. (PT). Saturday marks the end of regular-season play for the Mountain West Conference.
On Deck
The Mountain West Conference Championship begins Thursday, May 13 in Fort Collins, Colo., at Ram Field. The championships will continue through Saturday, May 15, with the winner earning an automatic berth to the NCAA's.
The Last Time Out
The Utes kicked off last week with an 8-0 victory over in-state foe Utah Valley State College. Utah would then drop two to Colorado State (6-2, 7-5) on Friday before sweeping New Mexico (4-3, 7-2) on Saturday. The games wrapped up an eight-game home stand and home play for Utah.
Quoting Head Coach Mona Stevens
"It's always a good challenge to play San Diego State in San Diego. Their field is at sea level, and we are a long ball team and they are not. It will be a match up of their pitching against our hitting. UNLV is a good team. They beat us at home in our first conference game, which we did not play well in. I think we can go there and come out with some wins.
"This weekend is about getting on a roll and building up our confidence heading into the conference championships."
Repeat Offenders
Glennis Donnelly, Devina Quintero and Melissa Stahnke are the only Utes to have double-digit multiple hit games with 19, 15 and 14, respectively. Donnelly also has 13 multiple RBI games, while Quintero has 12 multiple RBI outings. Utah doesn't have anybody with a current hitting streak over two games.
Long Ball Fever
The Utes have pounded out 59 home runs this season, which is one shy of tying the single-season record of 60 set by the 2001 team. Utah has at least one home run in each of its last five games and at least one in 33 of its 47 outings.
Conference Versus Non-Conference
The Utes are batting .284 in league play, compared to .258 on the season. Utah's pitching staff has a combined ERA of 5.39 in league games, versus 4.27 overall. The Utes have seven batters hitting over .250 in conference play, rather than four overall.
