SAN DIEGO, Calif.--The Utah softball team had a record-breaking day at the ball park as it defeated league-leader San Diego State 2-1 on Friday afternoon. The win moves Utah to 8-9 in league play, 20-29 overall, while San Diego State falls to 13-4 in conference play and 36-19 overall. The loss snapped a 15-game home league winning streak for SDSU, that dated back to the 2002 season.

It was a quick-paced game at San Diego State Field, as both teams went three-up three-down in the first two innings. Then in the third, Utah's number seven batter, Kate Nygaard, ripped a solo homer over the center field fence to give Utah a 1-0 lead. The long ball also tied the school record for home runs in a season by a Utah team (60). The Aztecs would tie up the game in the fifth after the ball went off Jackie Wong's glove and squirted into foul territory allowing Joann Figueroa to score from second. The run was unearned for Utah hurler Brianna Gourdin, who would have been out of the inning minus the error.

In the top of the seventh Ivette Hernandez reached on an infield single before moving to second after Lynsey Wall's infield grounder rolled between the Aztec third baseman's legs. Hernandez would go onto score off a bloop single by Nygaard to right field. The run would give Utah a 2-1 advantage, which Gourdin preserved in the seventh by retiring the side.

The victory was Gourdin's 15th of the season (15-6). The hurler allowed just three hits in the complete-game effort, while striking out three. Deanna Richards is credited with the loss for SDSU after allowing two runs (one earned) in six and two-third innings of work.
