LAS VEGAS, Nev.--The Utah softball team fell to UNLV 7-6 in the night cap of a doubleheader on Saturday. The loss gives UNLV a doubleheader sweep. Utah (20-31, 8-12 MWC) and UNLV (25-34, 7-13 MWC) will meet again next week to open the Mountain West Conference Tournament on May 13.
Utah pounded out three runs in the second to take an early 3-0 lead. Utah would add another in the fourth after an error by the shortstop allowed a Ute runner to reach. The run would come home on a single to short by Melissa Stahnke. UNLV would score a run of its own in the bottom of the fourth to make it 4-1.
In the sixth, the Utes would add two more off a two-run homer by Glennis Donnelly to left field. The home run broke the Ute school record for team dingers in a season with 61.
UNLV would rally in the bottom of seventh. The Rebels would load the bases in the bottom of the seventh and then clear them when Lisa Sampson ripped a double to the gap in left center. The Rebels would add another when Sampson came into score on a single by Kacey Ellis to make it 6-5. With the bases still loaded reliever Heather Bowlin would come on in relief of Samantha Schroeder. Bowlin would walk in a run before retiring the next batter, forcing a 6-6 score for extra innings. In the bottom of the seventh, UNLV's Bridgette Byrne would lead off the inning with a triple to right. Byrne would then score when Donnelly let Brittany Freight's infield grounder get away from her.
Bowlin is credited with the loss to fall to 2-7. Becky McDonald is credited with the victory to go to 3-8.
