THIS WEEK: The University of Utah women's tennis team begins the 2005 season matching up against No. 27 Oregon, No. 64 UC Irvine, and Portland on the road. Competition takes place Jan. 21-23 in Eugene, Ore.
LAST SEASON: Utah finished the season with a 7-16 overall record and a 1-6 mark in the conference. The Utes tied for 6th place in the Mountain West.
UTE NEWCOMERS: The women's tennis team has added a new group of talent to the roster. Lisa Blomquist, Tamarin Espinoza, Elizabeth Ferris and Cheyenne Reveche.
SCOUTING THE OPPONENT: The University of Oregon heads into the season with a No. 27 national ranking. Seven of 8 letter winners return to the Ducks this year. Among the returners is senior and three-time Pac 10 champion Daria Panova. Panova holds a No. 8 ranking in the ITA polls.
Last year the Ducks finished with a 17-9 overall record and a No. 23 national ranking.
UC Irvine opens the season with a No. 64 ranking in the ITA polls. The Anteaters finished 2004 with a 15-8 mark and 2nd place in the Big West Championships.
Porltand completed last season with an overall record of 10-15. The Pilots placed 6th at the WCC Tournament.
QUOTING HEAD COACH Megan Dorny: "We are excited to be heading to the state of Oregon to open our season. It will be a great test for our team as we face three very good teams right out of the starting gate. In our first match we play PAC-10 powerhouse Oregon on their home courts in Eugene. They are currently ranked #27 in the nation and have a lot of talent and experience throughout their line-up including Daria Panova who was ranked #8 in the nation in the preseason. It will give our young team (four freshmen, two sophomores) a good opportunity to see how we measure up with the nations elite."
In our second match we face Cal Irvine. We lost to them 6-1 on their home courts last year. We really hope to improve our showing against them this year. They are currently ranked #64. The match will take place in Eugene.
We travel to Portland for our final match versus the University of Portland. We defeated them in a thrilling 4-3 victory last year in Salt Lake. Whitney Eber came from 0-5 down in third set to win the deciding point. We will have to play even better this time if we are to defeat them on their home courts."
