THIS WEEK:
The University of Utah women's tennis team hits the road again. This week the Utes travel to Bozeman, Mont., to play Montana St. at 9:30 a.m. and Northern Colorado at 4:30 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 28. Utah continues competition against the University of Montana at 10: 00 a.m. on Saturday, Jan. 30.
REVIEWING LAST WEEK:
The Utes began the season last week on the road in Oregon with a 6-1 loss to No. 27 Oregon. The team also played No. 64 UC Irvine, who edged the Utes 4-3.
Utah picked up its first win of the season on Sunday against Portland (6-1). Sophomore Whitney Eber went undefeated at the No. 3 spot in the three matches. She defeated Oregon's Davina Mendiburu (5-7, 0-1, inj.), UC Irvine's Hui Leow (6-2, 2-6, 7-5), and Portland's Alyson Tyson (6-0, 6-1).
Ute freshmen also made a big debut in the top of the lineup over the weekend. Liz Ferris consecutively started at the No. 1 singles position. Freshman Emily Kwok played at No. 2 and picked up a win over Portland's Sanja Indic (6-3, 6-3).
SCOUTING THE OPPONENT:
Northern Colorado opens its season with Utah. Last year was the first in Division I competition for the women's tennis team. The Bears ended with a No. 29 ranking and an 11-6 overall record. Four starters return to the squad this year.
Montana St. and the University of Montana also begin their season matching up against the Utes. Montana State compiled a 5-14 overall record and Montana an 1-11 overall record in 2003-04. Both schools are part of the Big Sky conference.
