SALT LAKE CITY - When the spring semester begins in 2006, so too will the University of Utah softball season.
The Utes begin the preseason with individual workouts on Monday, Jan. 9, the same day that the spring semester also starts. Full-team practices begin a week later at Eccles Fieldhouse.
Utah returns its top three hitters from the 2005 campaign. Among the returnees are a pair of 2005 all-conference picks in Diana Phillips and Ivette Hernandez. Phillips led the team in hitting .309 for the year while Hernandez was the team's leading home run hitter, tallying nine round-trippers.
The Utes return five starters from last year's team and eight letterwinners. They also welcome a bevy of newcomers with six new faces on the roster.
The 2006 campaign begins on Feb. 10 with a three-day tournament in La Cruces, N.M. The Utes' first home date is on March 24, when they hosts a three-day tournament of their own.
