SALT LAKE CITY - The road map to the postseason has been mapped as head coach Mona Stevens has announced the University of Utah softball team's schedule for the upcoming year.
The 2006 campaign begins this fall when the team hones its skills for the impending season. Three home games highlight the fall schedule as Utah hosts Utah Valley State (Sept. 16), Utah State (Sept. 23) and Salt Lake Community College (Sept. 28). Offseason action concludes with a road trip to Colorado State (Oct. 1-2) to face CSU and perennial power Nebraska.
"I'm excited for fall ball," remarked Stevens. "I can't wait to get our new kids and our pitchers out on the field to see what they've got.
"This fall schedule is perfect for us. We have three good teams here at home and then we will be tested at Colorado State's fall tournament. By the end of fall ball, we'll have a feel for who we are and where we are at."
When the snow stops flying next spring, the softball team returns to the diamond with a host of nonconference tournaments to compliment its Mountain West Conference schedule.
"We've done our scheduling a little different this year," said Stevens. "We don't need a steady diet of top-25 teams. We're going to back off a little bit and play a better mix of teams. Our goal is to build confidence and to get them comfortable out there so that they have sturdy and stronger legs when Mountain West Conference play comes around."
The prestigious Kia Tournament (March 15-19) in San Diego, Calif., is the jewel of the tournaments on Utah's schedule. It's a five-day tournament that features a host of the best collegiate teams in the nation. The UNLV tournament (Feb. 17-19) will also be a competitive outing as will Florida State's tournament (March 10-12).
Utah will also host it's own four-team tournament on Feb. 24-26. Joining Utah for the three-day tourney will be Harvard, Portland State and Utah Valley State.
Mountain West Conference play starts at the end of March when the Utes host UNLV (March 31) and San Diego State (April 1). UNLV won an at-large to the NCAA tournament last season while MWC regular season and tournament champions Brigham Young invades Salt Lake City on April 22.
The regular season concludes with the MWC Tournament on May 11-13 in Las Vegas, Nev. The ensuing NCAA Tournament begins on May 11 and runs through the College World Series, which starts on June 1.
