Head coach Kyle Whittingham received 20 signed National Letters of Intent today, which combined with four mid-year junior college transfers and one mid-year incoming freshman, brings Utah's 2006 football signing class to 25.
The class includes 19 high school and six junior college players. The biggest beneficiaries were the lines, which gained a total of 12 new players (eight defensive and four offensive). Positions that added four players each were defensive back and running back. Three of the four new defensive backs are projected to play corner (one safety), while the offensive backs are divided evenly between running backs and H-backs. Rounding out the class were two linebackers, two receivers and a tight end. With four scholarship quarterbacks in the program, including the two starters from last year, Utah did not need to sign a QB.
Said Whittingham, "Our first priority in this year's recruiting was linemen, as opposed to last year when we concentrated more on the skill positions. We definitely got a lot stronger up front with this class."
The second-year head coach prefers not to single out any players, saying, "this is a solid group from top to bottom," and pointed instead to the composition of the class. "We signed predominantly high school players with a few key junior college players mixed in, which is typical of our recruiting philosophy. We have players coming in from eight states, which is indicative of how hard our staff worked to put this recruiting class together. We are especially pleased with how well we did right here in Utah. There was an exceptional number of Division I caliber players instate this year and we are elated about how many of them chose the University of Utah."
Eight of the new signees hail from Utah, second only to California with 10. Texas followed with two commitments and the states of Michigan, Hawaii, Washington, Nevada and Arizona all produced one Ute signee apiece.
Four mid-year junior college transfers are already enrolled in school and will participate in spring ball. This group includes linebacker Chet Blasucci, offensive lineman Dustin Hensel, offensive lineman Corey Seiuli and cornerback Mombroso Washington. George Molifua, from Carlsbad High School in Oceanside, Calif., recently returned from a LDS church mission, and also joined the team at mid-year. Three freshmen from this year's signing class are scheduled to go on church missions prior to enrolling in school. They are defensive end Nick Binks, wide receiver Sean Fitzgerald and tight end Peter Tuitupou.
