SALT LAKE CITY, Utah - Every player in uniform for the University of Utah women's basketball team scored at least two points Saturday afternoon in a 98-45 exhibition victory over Albertson College at the Jon M. Huntsman Center.
The Utes spread plenty of playing time around among their 12 players in uniform, with everyone playing at least 10 minutes. Four Utah players reached double-digit scoring. Marie Warner (Jr., Hamilton, Ont.) led all scorers in the contest with 16 points. Morgan Warburton (Soph., Helper, Utah) and Sasha McKinnon (Soph., Langley, B.C.) each added 13. Heidi Carlsen (Sr., St. George, Utah) tacked on 12. Lydia Whitehead (Soph., Hyrum, Utah) pulled down a game-high 11 rebounds.
Albertson College had a trio of players with eight points to lead the Lady Coyotes in scoring. Jori Grady, Denise Hill and Christon Vanderesch each tallied eight. Whitney Martin grabbed six rebounds to lead Albertson on the boards.
Utah struggled in the opening minutes against the Lady Coyotes' high-pressure defense. The Utes finally got on the scoreboard 1:45 into the contest with a pair of Jessica Perry (Jr., Guelph, Ont.) free throws. Albertson went scoreless for the first 5:49 of the contest, while the Utes built a 12-0 lead.
Utah pushed a 16-point lead to 22 midway through the second half when McKinnon and Hennasea Tokumura (Fr., Honolulu, Hawaii) hit back-to-back three-pointers. The two treys gave Utah a 29-7 lead. The Utes eventually took a 51-24 advantage into the halftime intermission. Carlsen and Warner each scored nine points in the first 20 minutes.
Utah took advantage of Albertson's defensive strategy in the second half, getting numerous easy looks at the basket after breaking the backcourt pressure. The Utes pushed their lead to 31 two minutes into the second half on a Warner tip-in. A McKinnon three-pointer increased the lead to 41, 69-28, midway through the second half.
A 13-1 Utah run gave Utah a 50-point lead, 88-38, with just less than four minutes remaining. Warburton scored five points during that Ute spurt. Utah pushed its lead to as many as 57 points in the closing minutes, before settling for the 53-point victory.
Utah shot 49.3 percent from the floor in the contest, compared to just 19.7 percent for Albertson. The Utes out-rebounded the Lady Coyotes 63-34. The Utes converted 7-of-15 three-pointers (46.7 percent) and were solid at the free-throw line, hitting 25-of-30 (83.3 percent).
Utah will play one more exhibition contest, hosting Fort Lewis College at 7 p.m. Tuesday at the Huntsman Center. The Utes' regular season opens Friday at Gonzaga.
