TALLAHASSEE, Fla. -- University of Utah hurler Karina Cannon may have allowed nine hits, but she didn't allow the University of North Florida to plate a single run in Utah's 3-0 win over the Ospreys in the first game of the Sunshine State Tournament.
The Utes improve to 9-3 for the year and chalk up their sixth straight victory. UNF stumbles to 13-11.
Cannon gets the win for Utah as she went all seven innings, improving to 4-1 on the year. She mowed down six opposing batters and allowed nine hits. Cannon didn't walk a single batter all game.
The Utes got all they needed in the third inning when Meghan Crouse reached on a two-out single to center field. Jackie Wong followed Crouse with a triple to right-center field, allowing Crouse to score and giving Utah the 1-0 lead.
Wong and Crouse were one of six Ute batters to tally the team's six hit hits on the afternoon.
Insurance runs came in the fourth and sixth innings, respectively. Jessica Shiery led off the fourth with her third home run of the season while Ivette Hernandez had a two-out solo shot in the sixth. That was Hernandez' first round-tripper of the year.
Katie Boskey took the loss for UNF as she falls to 5-5 on the year. The Osprey's Gwen Williams led all batters in going a perfect 3-for-3 at the plate.
Utah returns to action to play Georgia State this afternoon in the Sunshine State Tournament. First pitch is set for 1:30 p.m. (MST).
