TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - The University of Utah softball team won its seventh straight game and shut out its second straight opponent as it topped Georgia State in the second half of a doubleheader at the Sunshine State Tournament this evening, 2-0.
The Utes (10-5 overall) were led by the two-hit shutout performance of Sheri Shrock. She improves to 1-1 on the year in throwing all seven innings. She fanned four batters and did not allow a single walk.
It wasn't until the end of the game that Utah broke it open. After five innings of scoreless ball, Ivette Hernandez got the Utes rolling in the sixth. She singled to right field and advanced to second on an error. Kelly Matthews pinch ran for Hernandez and scored when Staci Hemingway hit her second double of the season. That was all the Utes would need as they finished the sixth with a 1-0 lead.
Hemingway led the Utes at the plate, going 2-for-3 with an RBI. The only other Ute with multiple hits was Jackie Wong. She was 2-for-4. In all, Utah tapped the Panthers (6-12 overall) for eight hits.
The insurance run came in the top of the seventh. Meghan Crouse led the inning off with a single and moved to second on Wong's groundout to second base. Crouse would score two batters later as Jessica Shiery belted her home on an RBI single to right-center field.
Meghan McCoy gets tagged with loss as she falls to 1-4 for the season. She allowed eight hits and surrendered only one earned run in seven innings of work.
The Utes return to action tomorrow when they play Bradley in the final game of pool play at the Sunshine State Tournament. First pitch is set for 8 a.m. (MST).
