SALT LAKE CITY - The University of Utah softball team (16-10 overall) returned to the win column today when it topped UVSC, 3-2, in its home-opener at Ute Field.
A three-run fourth inning erased a one-run deficit and lifted the Utes to victory.
The Utes got all three of their runs in the fourth inning. Trailing 1-0, Utah knotted the game at 1-1 when Hailey Davenport got an RBI on a fielder's choice to the shortstop. It allowed Devina Quintero to score from third.
Utah hung two more runs on the board when Sharee Fonoti hit a bomb over the left field fence, also scoring Davenport.
Diana Phillips led the Utes at the plate with a 2-for-3 outing. But, Fonoti was the most effective in going 1-for-2 with two RBI and a run scored.
Karina Cannon (7-4) got the nod and pitched for four innings. She allowed three hits but struck out four Wolverine batters. Nielsen came on in the fifth and pitched three innings in relief. Nielsen gets her second save of the year.
An RBI single in the first inning plated UVSC's only run. Rachel Hartgrove belted a double to the fence in left field. She would later score on Heidi Boyer's single to center.
Boyer (2-7) got the start in the circle for the Wolverines and gets tagged with the loss. She tossed all six innings for UVSC.
Leadoff hitter Chris Jimenez led the Wolverines with a 2-for-4 effort. She had one of the team's two RBI as well.
The Utes return to action tomorrow at 2 p.m. when they host Portland State. However, tournament action at Ute Field begins at 10 a.m. with Harvard battling UVSC.
