SALT LAKE CITY - The University of Utah softball team (18-10 overall) extended its winning streak to three games today as it bagged 8-5 and 3-0 wins over Portland State and Harvard, respectively, here at Ute Field this afternoon.
Utah pounded out 19 hits between the two games, belting 11 shots in the high-octane game against PSU and eight in the shutout victory over Harvard.
Three Utes led the team at the plate with three or more hits on the day. Jackie Wong led the way with a 5-for-6 showing. She also scored four runs in addition to plating one RBI. Devina Quintero was 4-for-6 with four RBI while Meghan Crouse went 3-for-6 with three runs.
Utah 8, Portland State 5
The Utes nearly lost their four-run lead but plated five runs in their last two at-bats to hold on for the 8-5 win over Portland State.
Meghan Dyer got the start in the circle and led the Utes through 5.1 innings of work. She mowed down 11 batters and only allowed one walk. She scattered six hits as Portland State tapped her for three runs, only one of which was earned.
Karina Cannon came on in the sixth to pick up her third save of the year.
The Utes raced out to a 4-0 lead on the Vikings, thanks in part to a two-run first inning. Utah put its first run on the board when Quintero's RBI single to right field allowed Wong to score from second. The home team doubled its lead when Hailey Davenport hit a grounder to third. While she was out on the play, it plated Diana Phillips from third.
Utah's lead doubled again thanks to Quintero's bat. She laid down a suicide squeeze in the third to score Wong and had an RBI single in the fifth that scored Crouse.
PSU rallied in the sixth. It plated three runs that inning to severely trim Utah's four-run lead. An RBI single by Kim Daniel made it 4-1 and a two-run error let the Vikings back into the game.
A four-run sixth inning for Utah was all it needed to put away the Vikings.
Quintero led the Utes at the plate against PSU. She went 3-for-3 with four RBI against Vikings. Crouse and Wong both went 2-for-3 at the plate.
Utah 3, Harvard 0
The Ute broke the defensive struggle with Harvard by plating a pair of runs in the fifth inning and a single run in the sixth.
Lindsie Nielsen's arm lifted the Utes to the win. She went 5.1 innings, fanning two Cimson batters and walking none. She allowed five hits and no runs. Sheri Shrock came on in the sixth to get her first save of the year.
Jessica Shiery's two-RBI double to right field in the fifth scored Wong and Crouse. It broke the scoreless tie and gave Utah the 2-0 lead. More insurance came from the bat of Fonoti who hit her second home run in as many days. This one was a solo shot over the left-center field fence in the sixth.
Wong's 3-for-4 effort led Utah's offense. The only other Ute with multiple hits against Harvard was Crouse. She went 2-for-3 against the Crimson.
