SALT LAKE CITY - A pair of Jessica Shiery home runs wasn't enough for the University of Utah softball team (28-14 overall) to remain undefeated at home as it dropped its first game at Ute Field in 2006. It was the San Jose State Spartans who rallied for the 7-4 win over the Utes.
Utah falls to 9-1 at home as the Spartans (22-20) scored six runs in the final two innings to escape town with the non-conference win.
Shiery and Kelly Matthews collected four of Utah's eight hits on the day. Shiery went 2-for-4 with three RBI and two runs. Matthews was 2-for-2.
It was the Spartans who scored first, taking a 1-0 lead on Danielle Eakin's solo home run in the first inning.
The Utes captured the 2-1 lead in the bottom of the first and stretched it to a two-run, 3-1 lead in the third. That cushion held through five innings.
Diana Phillips smacked a one-out triple in the first and would score on a Nicole Luna-Pickens wild pitch. Shiery single-handedly made it 3-1 all by herself. She had a solo homer in each the first and third innings. Those were her seventh and eighth homers of the year, respectively.
SJSU took control in the sixth inning, when it scattered five of its 11 hits and scored three runs to take the 4-3 lead. A two-RBI double by pinch hitter Vanessa Chagoya tied the game at three and an RBI single by Carlie Hill gave the Spartans the lead for good.
The Spartans made it 7-3 with three more runs in the seventh and Utah tried to rally in its last at bat. Shiery got her third RBI of the game when she hit a hot shot to the second baseman. Eakins' miscue in the field not only let Shiery reach safely, but also allowed Jackie Wong to score.
While Karina Cannon got the start, she was relieved after four innings of work. Lindsie Nielsen came on in relief and is hung with the loss. She allowed three Spartan hits and three earned runs. Nielsen falls to 2-3 for the year.
SJSU's Regina Farfan is credited with win.
