OREM, Utah - Three pitchers combined to toss a no-hitter in the nonconference outing against Utah Valley State as the University of Utah softball team (21-10 overall) blanked the Wolverines, 8-0 in five innings, to win their sixth straight.
Lindsie Nielsen got the win as she improves to 2-2 on the year. She went two innings and fanned three batters. Karina Cannon also went two innings and struck out two while Meghan Dyer went one inning and whiffed three while allowing only one walk.
The offense was buoyed by a pair of four-run innings in each the fourth and fifth.
Utah broke the scoreless tie in the fourth inning. It all started with Andrea Hoffman's RBI single that scored Sharee Fonoti. Meghan Crouse reached on an error and Jackie Wong tripled to left that plated both Hoffman and Crouse. Diana Phillips' RBI single scored Wong and gave Utah all it needed as it held a 4-0 lead.
Phillips led the way with three of Utah's 11 hits on the day. She went 3-for-4 and had one RBI. Fonoti was 2-for-3 with two runs scored and Hoffman was 2-for-3 with two runs and two RBI.
The Utes scored another four runs in the fifth and final inning. An RBI triple by Hoffman, RBI double by Ivette Hernandez and a sacrifice fly by Staci Hemingway gave Utah the 7-0 cushion. The Utes' final run came when Wong reached on a two-out Wolverine error, allowing Hoffman to score.
Hurler Jackie Roberts got the loss for UVSC as she went four innings and scattered 10 hits. She struck out three, walked one and allowed seven runs. Only four of the runs were earned as Utah capitalized on two Wolverine errors.
Up next for Utah is a conference doubleheader against Brigham Young on Saturday. First pitch at Miller Park is set for 1 p.m.
