LAS VEGAS - The Mountain West Conference honored four University of Utah softball players with all-conference accolades here on the eve of the MWC Tournament this evening. The tournament is set to begin with Utah taking on New Mexico at 11:30 a.m. (PDT) on Thursday.
Second baseman Jackie Wong, pitcher Karina Cannon, center fielder Diana Phillips and right fielder Jessica Shiery all landed on the all-conference team.
Wong was among one of the top offensive threats in the league and her team. The senior hit .459 in league play and owns the conference's best overall batting average at .456. Her conference slugging percentage is .689 while here on-base percentage is an impressive .535. Wong has been a force in the field too, chalking up only one error in over 200 chances. The senior had a hit in all but two conference games and finished the regular season with a 20-game hitting streak.
Cannon won the league honor in her first season on the team. The junior pitcher racked up eight league victories and owned a 2.84 earned-run average. She fanned 37 opposing batters and had a team-best .288 opposing batting average.
A sophomore, Phillips wins her second all-conference nod in as many years. She was second on the team in hitting .453 and owned striking slugging (.563) and on-base (.478) percentages. Phillips hit safely in all but one league contest and finished the regular season tied for the conference's longest hitting streak on the year (21 games).
