SALT LAKE CITY - University of Utah senior defensive back Eric Weddle has been named to another preseason watch list. The Maxwell Football Club recently announced its watch list for the Chuck Bednarik Award, given to the Outstanding Defensive Player of the Year.
Weddle is one of 60 candidates for the Bednarik Award, as selected by the Maxwell Football Club Advisory Committee. Additions and deletions to the list may be made throughout the 2006 season, based on player performance.
Twelve semifinalists for the Bednarik Award will be announced in October. The field will be trimmed to three finalists in November. The winner of the Chuck Bednarik Award will be announced on the Home Depot College Football Awards Show, which will air on ESPN in December.
Weddle, the reigning Mountain West Conference Defensive Player of the Year, is one of just two MWC student-athletes on the Bednarik watch list. He is joined list by TCU defensive end Tommy Blake.
Weddle has previously been named to watch lists for the Bronco Nagurski Award and the Ronnie Lott Trophy. Weddle has also been named a Preseason All-American by Athlon Sports and The Sporting News. He was recently listed as one of the top 12 defensive players in the nation by ESPN.com's Bruce Feldman.
