SALT LAKE CITY - Elizabeth Ferris of the University of Utah women's tennis team will begin this year ranked No. 67 in the nation, after the first listing of the NCAA Division I FILA/ITA Rankings were released on Tuesday, January 9.
Ferris, a junior this year, ended last season with a 108th national ranking, but was ranked No. 79 in the preseason rankings that were released September 8, 2006. Back in October, Ferris qualified to compete in the maindraw competition of the Riviera/ITA All-American Tournament. After a loss in the main draw competition, Ferris moved into the consolation bracket where she dominated several ranked opponents, including Anca Anastasiu of the University of Southern California whom was ranked No. 49 at the time. Ferris ended the fall schedule with a 9-4 singles record.
"Liz made a good jump in the rankings since the fall, climbing from 79 to 67, and she is very motivated to keep making the move up in the rankings. Having someone ranked right now is really motivating to the team in general, and I think the whole team realizes that achieving a national ranking is well within grasp," says head coach Megan Dorny. "As a team, we will be playing eleven teams that are currently ranked so it is a great opportunity for us to prove what caliber of team we can be this season. Having an individual who is highly ranked right now is just icing on the cake, but our primary goals are team ones."
