SALT LAKE CITY - The University of Utah women's tennis team played a hard match Thursday night against No. 66 Washington State. The Utes fell to the Cougars 3-4 after earning the doubles point and battling through singles.

The Utes started competition on a high note after sweeping past the Cougars in doubles play to earn the doubles point.

Competition was heated in singles play between the Utes and Cougars. No. 67 Elizabeth Ferris won her match at the No. 1 slot against No. 85 Ekaterina Burduli 6-4, 6-0, but Washington State's Marjolein Van de Ven came in and shut down Cheyenne Reveche 6-0, 6-3 at the No. 3 slot.

Sophomore Leigh Walsh stepped up for Utah at the No. 4 spot against Bianca Selaru. Walsh shut down the Cougar 6-1, 6-1 to give the Utes a 3-1 advantage.

Andrea Maughan played a tough match on Thursday against Washington State's Alexandra Stefanova at the No. 5 spot. Maughan played a strong game, but lost with the tie breaker 6-2, 7-6 (8-6).

With the score at 3-2 in the Utes' favor, the last four players were on nerves. Karine Bourdages and Emily Kwok were still on the courts for Utah facing Washington State's Aleksandra Cekic and Amy Toth.

Kwok lost her first set 3-6 to Toth, but stepped up to take the second set 6-2. In the third set, the two battled point-for-point. Kwok played a high level game that had Toth running from end-to-end of the court. However, the Cougar pulled herself together and hit a powerful shot that Kwok was unable to return on. Toth won the match 6-3, 2-6, 7-6 (9-7) over the Ute to tie up the overall match 3-3.

Bourdages and Cekic from Washington State were the last two standing. The Ute worked for the first set 7-5, but the Cougar pushed herself to take the second set 6-2. The intensity grew between the players, but Cekic ended the match 5-7, 6-2, 6-3 to clinch the overall win for the Cougars.

Quote from Head Coach Megan Dorny:
"I told the girls, who were very disappointed with their loss, that they had nothing to hang their heads about. They all gave a tremendous effort. Tennis matches, and dual matches for that matter, can be determined by a single point, and that is the situation the team was in tonight. The girls gave themselves an opportunity to win by working hard and playing from the heart. Next time they're in the same situation, I expect the outcome to be a little different."
