SALT LAKE CITY - The University of Utah Alpine and Nordic ski teams returned this week from their on-snow Thanksgiving camps. The alpine team spent four days skiing in Colorado, while the Nordic team spent a week skiing and racing in Montana.
Alpine team traveled to Loveland, Colorado to get on snow. The team was able to set courses and ski in gates for four days. Other teams on the hill included the University of New Mexico as well as the Swiss, French and Swedish national teams. The camp was a great chance for athletes to get their feet underneath them and have high-quality time on snow.
"The camp was crucial to the athletes development," head Alpine coach Jaka Korencan said. "Getting on the snow early is really important for us. Trying new equipment, dialing in equipment, video analysis, training in the gates, and even more important, team bonding. We all helped cook an awesome Thanksgiving dinner together. I wish I could eat like this more often."
The Nordic team spent a week of on-snow training in West Yellowstone, Montana. A lot of easy distance skiing took place with drills and equipment testing. Midway through the camp, the team competed in the season opener FIS races. Although the focus for the program wasn't speed in these races, Utah was the second-best club represented at the competition, which featured over 400 athletes.
"It was a great start for us, both the high quality training, as well as the races," head Nordic coach Wendy Wagner said. "We trained right through the competitions in an effort to get the most on-snow time possible, but the results were great!"
The team was happy to return to a wintry Salt Lake City and get back to studies and skiing locally. The Alpine team starts the college season in Steamboat Springs, Colorado on Jan 5th and 6th, while the Nordic team travels to U.S. National Championships in Michigan on January 1st.
