Utes race strong in Super Tour

With the second weekend of racing completed, the Utah Ski Team is in second place in the overall Super Tour standings. The Super Tour is the premier Nordic ski racing circuit in North America. Athletes use these races to get better points, which allow them better start positions in future competitions, plus help them qualify for international competitions.
December 7-9, five athletes drove to Bozeman for the weekends races and were able to compete on the same courses that will host the 2008 NCAA Championships in March. The biggest highlight of the weekend was Utah finishing 1 and 2 in the mens sprint race.
"It was great to watch Snorri and Even go 1 - 2 in the sprint. They skied really great through all the heats," said assistant coach Kristina Casey. "Even was leading out of every start with a fast double pole. For Snorri to win the final was great because he was even happy to be in the final (guaranteed top 6) so for him to win was awesome and now he knows he can win in a sprint and a distance race."
Overall everyone skied well over the weekend, according to coach Casey.
Coach Casey added the following about the team's performance:
"The skiers felt better then they did at the West Yellowstone Supertour two weeks ago and they are getting their race strategies dialed in. In the sprint Ian Havlick qualified for the heats and skied a very strong quarter against one of the fastest heats.
Ben Fick had no problem winning the Junior Boys Final and looked very strong. He would have been right in there in the heats. Sarah McCarthy qualified in 9th and skied through her quarter with ease and fought in her semi hard and was strong in the women's B final.
In the distance skate race on a very hard course everyone held themselves together and worked on dialing in race strategies. We are looking good and as we gear things up for US Nationals and the NCCA season we will only be coming on faster."
