TEMPE, Ariz. - It took extra innings for the University of Utah softball team and the No. 17-ranked Texas Longhorns to settle the score. The Utes upset the perennial power, coming out on top in the 5-4, 10-innning affair here on the last day of the Kajikawa Classic in Tempe, Ariz.

"We definitely came into today's game with same energy and focus we had in last night's win over Nevada," said head coach Angie Jacobs. "We felt we had unfinished business with Texas and it took a total team effort for us to beat tem. We couldn't more proud of how this team performed when the odds were stacked against it.

"This was a good finish to this tournament and it gives us good momentum heading into the tournament in Las Vegas next weekend."

Utah scattered seven hits around the field as it improved to 2-2-1 on the year. Texas (4-1) belted out six hits.

Staci Hemingway hit a hot shot off the third baseman's glove in the top of the 10th. The ball caromed into left field, allowing Meghan Crouse to score the game-winning run from second.

Hemingway led the way as she was 2-for-5 with an RBI today. Dyer came on in relief in the seventh inning. She picks up the win in improving to 2-1 on the season. In all, she whiffed six batters in only four innings of work. Cannon got the start, tossing six innings.

It was Dyer who arose to the occasion defensively. With one out and the game-tying run on third, Dyer fanned the last two batters of the game to secure the victory.

The Utes jumped all over two Longhorn errors in the first inning and raced out to a 3-0 lead on the nationally-ranked power. With Crouse reaching on a throwing error and walks to Kara Foster and Kristie Keller, the bases were loaded for Cannon. She hit a two-out fly ball to right field, only to see the ball hit the fielder's glove and fall to the ground. The error cleared the bases, lifting Utah to a 3-0 lead.

Utah would hold the Longhorns hitless for three and two-thirds innings but a solo homer in the fifth, and two RBI singles and a wild pitch in the sixth found Texas leading, 4-3, heading into the seventh.

The Utes battled back when pinch hitter Hailey Davenport hit a solo homer to lead off the seventh, tying the game at 4-4.

Erin Tresselt came on to relieve Meagan Denny for Texas. Tresselt took the hard-luck loss.

Utah returns to action next weekend when it plays in the Louisville Slugger Desert Classic in Henderson, Nev.
