SALT LAKE CITY - Elizabeth Ferris from the University of Utah women's tennis team was named this week's Mountain West Conference Player of the Week.
Ferris, a native of Anaheim, Calif., won all three of her singles matches at the No. 1 slot for the Utes during last week's competition against Weber State, Kansas State, and the University of Kansas. The junior took a straight-set match from Inalise Pienaar from Weber State 6-1, 6-0 on Feb. 14 during a home dual match where the Utes honored head coach Megan Dorny's family.
For her first match on the road, Ferris took on Kansas State's Viviana Yrureta for a 6-4, 4-6, 7-6 (7-3) hard-fought victory. Ending the week, the Ute faced Elizaveta Avdeeva from the University of Kansas in an afternoon battle that ended in a 6-7(5), 7-6(5), 7-5 win in Ferris' favor.
In doubles play, the Ute partnered up with sophomore Leigh Walsh for an 8-3 victory over Pienaar and Gabi Venditto from Weber State.
This is the second time Ferris has earned the Mountain West Conference women's tennis Player of the Week award. Last year she earned the award after a victory over then No. 18 Olga Boulytcheva from BYU.
