THIS WEEK: UNM INVITATIONAL
Utah will travel to Taos River to compete in the New Mexico Invitational. The Utes last visited the Land of Enchantment in 2005, with then-sophomore Gaspar Perricone racing to a 22nd-place finish in the men's GS. The team finished fourth overall. This year the Utes are looking to finish even higher.
"We're ready to go," said head alpine coach Jaka Korencan before boarding a flight to Albequerque. "I think everyone is excited for some nice weather and conditions that will allow us to ski to our potential."
The alpine team will ski in a make-up GS race Thursday, due to incliment weather at the MSU and DU invitationals.
LAST WEEK: DU INVITATIONAL
Snorri Einarsson led the Utes with a victory in the men's 15K classic, finishing in 46:58.4. Einarsson passed Denver's Rene Reisshauer in the final 10 meters of the race to earn the win. Sara Schweiger led the Utes on the women's side, racing to a fourth-place finish in Saturday's 10K mass start with a time of 37:49.5.
"It was great to see Snorri get his first win," commented head coach Eli Brown. "The men and women were both solid last weekend and it looks like our training program is paying off."
The alpine skiers battled snowy conditions that led to numerous falls and disqualifications. In the men's GS, defending national champion Scott Veenis enjoyed one of his best finishes of the year, placing seventh with a time of 1:57.46. Tague Thorson finished fifth in the slalom and (1:25.36) and 11th in the GS with a time of 1:58.02. Utah's women's team followed the lead of Mikaela Grassl, who finished fourth in the women's slalom with a time of 1:35.35 to pace the Utes.
The team finished third overall with a total of 505 points, trailing only Colorado and host Denver, which won the event.
TAGUE, HE'S IT
University of Utah freshman skier Tague Thorson finished second in the combined standings at the World University Games in Torino, Italy. Thorson was the only US skier to finish in the top-10 in all three alpine events. Thorson placed ninth in the super G, sixth in the slalom and fourth in the giant slalom.
"I'm really proud of him," says coach Korencan. "He's maturing as a racer and really having a great season. Being the top American at a world event is a great accomplishment."
Thorson skied to a fifth-place slalom finish at last week's DU Invite.
NEXT WEEK: NCAA WESTERN REGIONALS
The Utes will look forward to their biggest event of the season, as they attempt to qualify for the NCAA championships in March. The event will be held in Truckee and Norden, California, and will be hosted by the University of Nevada. Last season the Utes finished fifth in this event, with then-freshman Scott Veenis being honored as the West Region's MVP.
