ATTITASH, N.H. - The University of Utah reached the midway point at the NCAA Championships Thursday in sole possession of third place with 280 points. The University of Dartmouth leads all schools with 330 points.
Cold and blustery conditions continued in the second day of competition, which featured the men's and women's GS events. Defending national champion Scott Veenis led the men's team with a solid sixth-place finish, recovering well after finishing 15th on his first run. Tague Thorson battled tough conditions to finish 21st.
The weather was crazy again today," head coach Eli Brown said. "The highlight was to see Scotty (Veenis) go from 15th in first run to 6th in the second."
Leading the women was Chirine Njeim, whose two-run time of 1:32.48 earned her sixth place, matching teammate Veenis for the best finish of the day for the Utes. Mikaela Grassl's (10th, 1:33.63) effort gave Utah two skiers in the top 10.
"Chirine was fast, it was good to see her place well" coach Brown said. The team was consistent again today and we are happy with that."
Competition will resume tomorrow with the Nordic team competing in two mass-start classic races.
"Things are looking good for tomorrow," said coach Brown. "The athletes are resting and our staff is working hard in the wax room preparing skis."
