SALT LAKE CITY - The University of Utah softball team (21-19-1 overall, 2-7 Mountain West) broke out of its four-game slide in impressive fashion as the Utes raced past Colorado State here this afternoon, bagging the 8-4 league win.
The loss drops the Rams to 23-23 and to 2-4 in loop play.
"I think we came out with more enthusiasm and energy than Colorado State did this afternoon," said head coach Angie Jacobs. "We out-matched them in those areas and we were able to take advantage of it and get a victory here today."
A pair of home runs, one each in the first and second innings, sparked the Utah offense that tagged CSU for nine hits. Diana Phillips hit a second-pitch home run to start the game and Hailey Davenport hit a three-run shot in the second frame to extend Utah's lead to 4-0.
Meghan Dyer got the start in the circle and she sees her record improve to 15-12. She allowed only five CSU hits and one walk. Dyer fanned five batters.
Staci Hemingway and Meghan Crouse were both 2-for-3 at the plate while Phillips was 2-for-4. Davenport's three RBI led all Utes.
A two-out, RBI single by Stacey Leigh in the fourth made the score 4-1. But Utah plated two unearned runs in fourth inning to make it 6-1. A long, lazy fly ball from the bat of Phillips got the center fielder all twisted around. She dropped the ball on a would-be third out, allowing two runners to score.
The fifth saw Utah get an RBI single from Andrea Hoffman and an RBI double from Meghan Crouse, giving Utah the seven-run, 8-1 cushion.
CSU countered with an RBI double and a two-run home run in the sixth before its rally petered out.
Jessica Strickland is tagged with the loss, falling to 7-8 on the year. Leigh was the team's top hitter with a 2-for-3 effort.
The same two teams will do battle at Ute Field on Saturday. First pitch is set for 1 p.m.
