Softball Drops Season Finale to UNLV

SALT LAKE CITY - UNLV scored five unearned runs in downing the University of Utah softball team (25-26-1, 5-14 Mountain West) in the season finale here this afternoon, 8-3.
With the victory, UNLV ups its mark to 37-27 overall and to 12-8 in league play.
"We would've liked to have won this game for our seniors," said head coach Angie Jacobs. "We came out and played hard but we didn't execute very well at the end. The ball just didn't bounce our way and that's unfortunate. But, that's just how this game goes sometimes."
The home team tagged the Rebels for nine hits this afternoon. Taylorsville High products Diana Phillips and Tori Medina led the Utes at the plate today. Phillips went 3-for-4 while Medina went 2-for-3. Meghan Crouse was also 2-for-3 while Staci Hemingway was 2-for-4.
Hemingway extended her hit streak to 10 straight at bats, launching an RBI double to the gap in left-center field in the first inning. But, her streak came to halt in the third, popping out to center field.
Senior Karina Cannon got the start in the circle, here on senior day. She allowed six runs on the day, but only one of them was an earned run. Cannon went for six innings and fellow senior Meghan Dyer came on in relief to pitch the final inning.
UNLV seized control of the game during the fifth, jumping allover Utah's three errors. The three miscues allowed the Rebels to plate four unearned runs, taking a 6-2 lead.
Utah scored first, tallying a run Staci Hemingway's double to the gap in left-center field. It scored Diana Phillips all the way from second base. She led the inning off with an infield single.
UNLV responded in the second frame, plating a run on Cannon's wild pitch. It allowed Rosa Ordaz to score from third.
Utah recaptured the lead in the fourth, albeit briefly. Kara Foster doubled to center and then scored from second on Kristie Keller's bloop single to left field.
Down 5-2 in the fifth, Hailey Davenport's RBI single to left trimmed the UNLV to 5-3 but the visitors plated a run in the sixth and two in the seventh to run away with league win.
UNLV finished with 12 hits on the day.
