LOGAN, Utah -- The University of Utah Cross Country team placed third of five with a score of 64 at their season opener at Utah State on Friday. The Utes were led by freshman Lauren Lewis who placed fourth in the 5k race with a time of 17:50.2.
"I was impressed with the effort level of the women today," said head coach Kyle Kepler. "Everyone showed great effort and gave everything they had."
Kepler also cited the performance of sophomore Stephanie Skoreyko and junior Janett Ern.
"They really stepped up. They know that we're counting on them more this year. Steph really wasn't 100% last year. Hopefully, she'll continue to improve and stay away from the injury bug."
Also scoring for the Utes was Becky Mackelprang (7th, 18.03.3), Stephanie Skoreyko (14th, 18:25.3), Janett Ern (16th, 18:31.0) and Kellie Anderson (23rd, 18:47.1). Lauren Endersen (19:18.0), and Alexis Davis (20:00.9) also ran for the Utes, finishing 31st and 35th, respectively.
Weber State won the event with 43 points led by the first-place effort of Sariah Long (17:17.7). Utah Valley University placed second (62 points), followed by Utah (64), Utah State (80), and Idaho (90).
Kepler ends with, "The team didn't finish the race as well as I had hoped, but we saw some improvements and some areas that need to be corrected. Overall, I am very pleased with the outcome and look to continue to improve as the season progresses."
