SALT LAKE CITY - The University of Utah women's team has officially broke into the Intercollegiate Tennis Association's (ITA) rankings after a four year drought. After two big wins over nationally ranked opponents, the Utes have earned a No. 67 ranking.
The Utes played a three-match winning weekend last week, two of which were over ranked opponents. The Utes defeated previously ranked No. 43 Oregon 5-2. On Saturday the Utes continued their momentum for a 4-3 win over Cal Poly. Cal Poly was ranked No. 64 at the time.
"We are excited to break into the rankings for the first time in several years, especially this early in the season," said head coach Mat Iandolo. "One of our goals this year was to be ranked by the end of the season, so now we will be working to improve our ranking throughout the rest of the year."
The last time the women's tennis team was ranked was in 2004 where they had maintained a No. 75 national ranking from February 10- March 9 under the direction of Megan Dorny.
