CRESTED BUTTE, Colo. - Even Sletten and Snorri Einarsson paced the Utah ski team to second-place after the first day of the Western State Invitational, finishing 1-2 in the 10-km Classic.
The Utes garnered 228 points, just behind first-place Colorado (234.5 points). Rounding out the top-five is Denver (218.5), New Mexico (161) and Nevada (144).
For Sletten, it was the first win of his career. He finished second to Einarsson a week ago in the 15-km Classic at the Colorado Invitational. Ben Fick rounded out the men's scoring, placing 13th.
"This was probably our best day ever," Director of Skiing Eli Brown said. "It was exciting to see Even win for the first time. Snorri was a strong second. Everyone did a great job dealing with the altitude and racing their hardest. Once again, head Nordic coach Wendy (Wagner) and assistant coach Kristina (Casey) did a great job with the skis."
The Nordic women also competed strong, with five Utes finishing in the top-12 in the 5-km Classic. Zoe Roy had her best finish of the season, leading Utah with a fourth-place run. She was followed by Kjersti Boe (fifth) and Sarah MacCarthy (seventh) while Annelies Cook (10th) rounded out the top-10. Sara Schweiger crossed the line 12th.
"Zoe is a freshman walk-on for us," Brown said. "We already know it's going to be hard to pick three to go to NCAA's. They are all skiing great."
The alpine events were marred by poor weather. The women were able to get one run of the giant slalom in, which was counted as a final when the second run was canceled. Eva Huckova, who had her first collegiate victory in the GS two weeks ago, followed that up with a second-place finish. Mikaela Grassl (eighth) and Chirine Njeim (10th) also finished in the top-10.
The men's giant slalom was halted during the first run and later canceled. There has been no decision on whether the race will be made up.
"We are lucky to come out of today with no injuries," Brown said. "The conditions were pretty scary. It is snowing hard and the visibility is poor."
Utah continues at the Western State Invitational, Friday, Feb. 2, with the Nordic freestyle and alpine slalom events.
