SALT LAKE CITY - The University of Utah women's tennis team earned a No. 67 national ranking this week from the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA). The Utes continue to climb the charts after dominating Eastern Washington 7-0, and playing a close match against currently ranked No. 49 Boise State for a 4-3 loss over the weekend.
THIS WEEK
The Utes will prepare this week for Washington State University. The team will travel to Pullman, Wash. to compete at the Simmelink Tennis Courts on Friday. The match is set for 6 p.m.
THE UTES
The University of Utah had a good run over the weekend on the road against Boise State (49) and Eastern Washington. Against the Broncos, the Utes earned the doubles point, which is almost unheard of for a home match for Boise State. The Utes tried to rally for the win, but couldn't quite get over the hump. The following day, the Utes came back for a 7-0 domination of Eastern Washington.
Last year, the Utes and Cougars played in Salt Lake City at Eccles Tennis Center. It was a close match, but the Utes fell 4-3.
WASHINGTON STATE
The Cougars are currently ranked No. 46 by the ITA with a 5-1 record. The team has posted wins over Mountain West Conference opponenets No. 58 BYU (4-3), Wyoming (4-3), and Air Force (7-0). They have also posted wins over Idaho (7-0), and Eastern Washington (7-0). The only loss for the Cougars came against No. 41 Denver. The tables were turned on the Cougars for the first time. Denver swept the match for a 7-0 win.
The Cougars are led my No. 91 Ekaterina Burduli. In her senior year, she has already compiled a 16 - 3 singles record and an 11-14 doubles record.
