THIS WEEK:
The Utes travel to Bridger Bowl and Bohart Ranch, Mont. for the NCAA West Regional. The Utes wrapped up the regular season Feb. 22-23 at the New Mexico Invitational. Many of the Utes' top competitors did not make the trip to New Mexico in order to rest for the postseason. The NCAA Championships will be held at the same site Mar. 5-8. The Utes finished within the top two of the team standings at three of their four regular-season events.
In 2007, the Utes competed at the NCAA West Regional in Norden, Calif., finishing third. The team qualified a full 12-skier squad for the NCAA Championships. Kyle Kung turned in a surprise second-place finish in the slalom, earning himself a berth in the NCAA West Regional.
LAST TIME OUT:
Utah picked up its second team title of the season in Taos, New Mexico Jan. 30. In the makeup men's GS, Hermann Lager finished ninth, Scott Veenis finished 10th, and the Utah alpine skiers competed in the men's GS and pulled out enough points for the victory. The race had been postponed due to bad weather at the Western State Invitational in Crested Butte, Colo. Utah finished the event with 585 points. Denver was second with 569.5 points.
The following day (Feb. 1), the Utes competed in the University of New Mexico Invitational in Taos and Red River, N.M. The team skied to a fifth-place finish, its lowest of the season. Tague Thorson was the standout performer for the weekend, finishing first in the men's slalom. Scott Veenis finished sixth in the men's GS, and Eva Huckova finished 11th in the women's GS. Casey Simons was 12th in the men's 10K Classic, and Sara MacCarthy was fifth in the women's 5K Classic. Utah finished with 244 points, and Colorado finished first with 591 points.
RULIN' THE RMISA:
The final Rocky Mountain Intercollegiate Ski Association standings were full of Ute skiers, notably Snorri Einarsson, Tague Thorson and Eva Huckova. Einarsson finished first in the men's final Nordic standings with 251 points. Thorson took first in the men's slalom with 126 points. Huckova finished tied for first in the women's GS (125 pts.) and tied for third in women's slalom (122 pts.). Other impressive Ute finishes included Kjersti Boe, who finished fifth in the women's Nordic standings with 234 points, and Even Sletten finished fourth in the final Nordic standings with 244 points.
SUPER SLOVENKA:
Newcomer Eva Huckova turned in her second collegiate victory at the Western State Invitational in the women's slalom. The fantastic freshman also finished second in the GS. At the Utah Invitational, only her second collegiate event, she finished third in slalom and first in GS. Huckova hails from the city of Banska Bystricka, Slovakia and represented her country at the 2006 Torino Olympics, finishing 27th in the giant slalom. Huckova finished tied for first in the GS standings with 125 pts. and tied for third in the slalom standings with 122 points.
FEEL-GOOD SNORRI:
Sophomore Snorri Einarsson turned in his third victory of 2008 at the Western State Invitational in Crested Butte, Colo.The defending national champion's victory in the 15K Classic was the fifth of his collegiate career, and the third time this season he has won the event. Einarsson won the 15K Freestyle at the 2008 Colorado and Utah Invitationals, and in 2007 Einarsson won the 15K Classic at the Denver Invitational and the 20K Classic at the NCAA Championships. Einarsson finished first in the final RMISA Nordic standings with 251 points.
