SALT LAKE CITY - The University of Utah women's tennis team will host South Carolina at Eccles Tennis Center on Saturday. The match is set to start at noon as the No. 53 Utes look to defend their home courts against No. 33 Gamecocks. This will be the Utes' last match against a non-conference opponent. Utah will face San Diego State on March 28.
UTE NOTES:
Utah is currently ranked No. 53 by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA). The team has tallied a 9-4 record so far this season and are on a three-match winning streak. Last weekend the Utes posted wins over Montana (7-0) and Weber State (7-0).
Senior Elizabeth Ferris will lead the Utes against South Carolina on Saturday. The Ute has compiled a 23-8 singles record so far this season and has earned a No. 53 national ranking by the ITA. Last week, Ferris defeated Liz Walker of Montana 6-2, 6-0 at the top spot for the Utes.
In doubles play, Ferris and Emily Kwok team up to lead the Utes. The duo earned a No. 41 ranking by the ITA earlier in the season, but lost it after not playing any ranked doubles teams. The duo is looking to regain a doubles ranking after this weekend if they can defefat South Carolina's top doubles team.
SCOUTING THE OPPOSITION:
South Carolina Gamecocks are currently ranked No. 33 by the ITA. The team has compiled a 7-4 record so far this year with a highlighted 4-3 win over No. 9 Vanderbilt University on March 2, 2008.
The squad is led by No. 23 Gina Schofield at the top spot in both singles and doubles play. Schofield has tallied a 19-7 singles record and 17-7 doubles record with partner Ana Zubari.
Zubari is ranked No. 69 by the ITA and plays at the No. 2 spot for the Gamecocks. Utah's Evgenia Kryuchkova will face Zubari on Saturday. Schofield and Zubari are currently ranked No. 19 in doubles play.
