FULLERTON, Calif. - The Utah softball team took full advantage of a second opportunity to play No. 1 Arizona State, falling 3-0 to the Sun Devils on the first day of the Judi Garman Classic, hosted by Cal-State Fullerton.
The Utes (14-13) lost a previous meeting between the teams back on March 7, 9-0.
Ashley Smuda (8-7) pitched for the Utes, striking out seven in the loss and allowing two earned runs.
Kaitlin Cochran scored the first two runs of the game in the bottom of the fourth inning with a two-run home run to right field. Rhiannon Baca added a run in the fifth, with the Sun Devils successfully executing a double steal.
Katie Burkhart pitched a no-hitter for ASU. Although she did not allow a walk, she hit three batters during the course of the game.
Utah continues at the Classic on Friday, March 20, facing No. 14/18 DePaul at 6:00 pm and No. 14/19 Fresno State at 8:00 pm.
