FULLERTON, Calif. - Angie Boardman hit two home runs to pace the Utah softball team in a 5-2 victory over Illinois on Friday, March 21, at the Judi Garman Classic.
Diana Phillips led off the game with a single to right field before Boardman hit her first home run of the game, battling through a long at bat before sending the ball over the fence in left center to give the Utes (16-14) a 2-0 lead.
Boardman's second home run came in the fourth inning, putting Utah up 3-0. She was 2-for-3 with three RBI in the game.
The Utes staged a two out rally in the fifth inning, with Laura Dahlberg and Phillips each walking to put two on base. Andrea Hoffman entered the game as a pinch-hitter, doubling to right field to score both Dahlberg and Phillips.
Illinois scored two unearned runs in the sixth inning when Lana Armstrong hit a two RBI single down the left field line, cutting the Ute lead to 5-2.
Ashley Smuda (10-7) pitched six innings with four strikeouts. Brittany Parker earned her second save of the season, entering to pitch the seventh inning and striking out one.
The Utes close out the Judi Garman on Saturday, March 22, against No. 18/19 Washington.
