LOGAN, Utah - The Utah softball team split a doubleheader against in-state rival Utah State, dropping the first game, 3-1, before winning the second, 9-4.
Aubrie Stroman's sacrifice fly in the first inning and Emily Reilly's home run in the second inning gave the Aggies (6-18) a 2-0 lead in game one. The Utes (17-16) got on the board in the fourth, as Devina Quintero hit an RBI double down the right field line, scoring Angie Boardman. Utah State added an insurance run in the fifth inning, an unearned run that scored after a pair of Ute errors.
Diana Phillips was 2-for-4 in the game one to lead the Utes at the plate. In the circle, Ashley Smuda (10-8) had three strikeouts in the loss.
In the second game, Utah took a 1-0 lead in the third inning. Phillips had her third triple of the year to score Bonnie Muir, who reached base with a single. However, the Aggies came back in the bottom of the inning to tie the game, 1-1, with an unearned run which scored Jessica Law.
The Utes came back in the fourth to take the lead for good when Quintero doubled to send home Kara Foster. Foster led off the inning with a walk. Utah added two more runs in the fifth with a two-run home run from Muir.
Although Utah State scored two runs in the fifth, the Utes continued to increase their lead with runs in the sixth and seventh innings. Andrea Hoffman's RBI double in the sixth brought in Quintero to score before Utah exploded for four runs in the seventh inning. After Phillips led off the inning with a double and Boardman walked, Foster sent the first run of the game in with a single to left field. Quintero cleared the bases with a three-run home run.
The Aggies attempted a comeback with a run in the seventh inning before pitcher Brittany Parker got Megan McDonald to fly out to end the game.
Parker pitched seven innings, allowing just two earned runs with six strikeouts. She raises her record to 7-8 on the year.
Quintero was 3-for-4 with four RBI and two runs scored in game two, while Foster was 2-for-3 with two runs scored. Muir went 2-for-4 with two RBI.
The Utes stay in-state this weekend with a three-game series against Utah Valley State, beginning in Orem on Saturday, March 29, at noon.
