BOZEMAN, Mont. - Even Sletten earned his second All-America honor of the NCAA Skiing Championships with a 10th-place finish in the 20-km Classic on the third day of the championships. Utah stands third overall after three days of competition.
Sletten scored 30 points for the Utes with the finish. Also with a solid race was Ben Fick, whose 12th-place run tallied 28 points. Snorri Einarsson crossed the line 21st for 19 points.
On the women's side, Sara Schweiger led Utah with a 15th-place run. She tallied 25 points. Annelies Cook was 17th for 23 points while Zoe Roy finished 24th for 16 points.
"It was a tough day for us," Director of Skiing Eli Brown said. "We took a gamble on the wax and thought it would warm up more, but it got colder and that affected the skis. It was disappointing not to have our best day when it counted the most.
"We still have a chance to move up tomorrow and are rallying around our alpine team to get them fired up. They will hit the slalom hill tomorrow with no holding back."
Western schools all rank among the top three, led by Colorado (483 points) and Denver (465.5 points) in first and second, respectively. Utah stands third with 429 points while Eastern schools Dartmouth (412 points) and Middlebury (401 points) round out the top five.
"I am so proud of our athletes and coaches for all their hard work," Brown said. "We are staying positive and aiming to have a great day on the slopes tomorrow."
The championships wrap up on Saturday, March 8, with the men's and women's slalom events at Bridger Bowl.
