SALT LAKE CITY - The University of Utah women's tennis team dropped to a No. 63 national ranking this week when the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) released their updated rankings. On an individual level, however, seniors Elizabeth Ferris and Emily Kwok returned to the doubles rankings to be amongst the top 50 in the country. After going undefeated last weekend, the Ute duo has earned a No. 41 national ranking. Ferris also made a big leap in the singles rankings going to No. 54 this week.
The Utes have had a strong season, but faced a rough weekend of conference matches last weekend. 47-th ranked New Mexico defeated Utah 4-3 and No. 20 TCU swept the match 7-0. The Utes were previously on a three-match winning streak over conference opponents Wyoming (4-1), Colorado State (5-2), and Air Force (7-0) before last weekend. The team has tallied a 13-8 season record and are currently 4-3 in conference play. The Utes will play their last conference match against BYU this Saturday.
Ferris, a native to Anaheim, Calif., has tallied a 29-10 season record in singles play to earn a No. 54 national ranking by the ITA. The Ute has posted wins over No. 2 Aurelija Miseviciute of Arkansas, No. 45 Gira Schofield of South Carolina, and No. 64 Maria Mizyuk of Nevada. The Ute also represented Utah in the 2006 and 2007 Riviera/ITA Women's All-American Championships. She made it as far as the round of 32 in the qualifying rounds of the tournament in 2007.
In doubles play, Ferris and Kwok have been near unstoppable, only losing four doubles matches since the start of the season. The Ute duo has tallied a 16-4 record so far and posted wins over No. 17 Anna Sydorska and Macall Harkins of TCU, No. 34 Gira Schofield and Ana Zubori of South Carolina, and No. 57 Polina Kokoulina and Pichittra Thongdach of Boise State. After the win over the TCU duo last weekend, Ferris and Kwok have rightfully earned a No. 41 doubles ranking by the ITA.
