ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - The University of Utah baseball team raced out to a 4-0 lead on New Mexico here this evening, but the Lobos scored five unanswered runs, including the game-winner in the bottom of the 12th, to claim the 5-4 league win.
With two out and a runner on first in the bottom of the 12th, Rafael Neda hit a double to score Kevin Atkinson from first. It lifted the Lobos past the Utes, who have now lost four straight games.
Stephen Streich, who came on in relief in the 11th inning, is saddled with the loss. He threw for one inning, allowing two hits and one earned run. Stephen Fife got the start this evening, and he went eight innings. Fife allowed seven hits, four runs (three earned) and issued one walk. He did strike out eight Lobo batters.
The hits were equal until the 12th inning. New Mexico finished with the 11-9 edge in that category. Leading the Utes in hitting was Cody Guymon. He was 2-for-5 with three RBI and two runs scored. Austin Jones went 2-for-4.
The Ute raced out to a 4-0 lead after 1.5 innings, and still held the 4-3 lead after 7.5 innings. But, Brian Cavazos-Galvez hit a one-out solo homer off of Fife in the bottom of the eighth to tie it up.
Utah scored first, in the first inning, when Lobo starter Bobby LaFromboise issued a two-out, bases-loaded walk to Cooper Blanc.
That was followed by a three-run second inning for Utah. All three runs came from one swing of the bat as Guymon hit a three-run homer. It scored Corey Shimada and DC Legg, both of whom reached on singles.
However, UNM cut into Utah's lead with three runs of its own in the bottom of the second. Two of those runs came off of Atkinson's homer. Neda followed Atkinson's homer with a triple, and later scored UNM's third run after a fielding error.
Clinton Cox, who came on to throw 3.1 innings of relief ball, gets the win. He allowed one hit and one walk, fanning one Utah batter. Cavazos-Galvez led the Lobos with a 5-for-6, one-RBI effort at the plate.
The same two teams will square off again tomorrow in Albuquerque. First pitch is set for noon.
