PROVO, Utah - The Utah softball team snapped a three-game winning streak with an 8-0 loss to BYU on Friday, April 18.
Sharee Fonoti went 2-for-2 for Utah (22-20, 5-4 MWC) in the loss. Freshman Brittany Parker pitched all four innings, striking out two. She goes to 9-11 on the year with the loss.
The contest marked the first Deseret First Dual softball game of the season, and BYU picks up 1.5 points with the win. The Cougars lead the Dual 29.5-24.5.
The Cougars (31-14, 7-2 MWC) scored two runs in both the second and third innings to take a 4-0 lead. In the second inning, Jessica Purcell had an RBI single to score the first run of the game while Angeline Quiocho successfully executed a double steal to tally the second run of the inning. Daniela Snow and Purcell each had RBI singles in the third inning.
Purcell's two-RBI single through the left side was the big hit in a four-run fourth inning for BYU. She was 2-for-2 with three RBI to lead BYU.
Today's game will be aired on The Mtn. on April 19, at 5:00 pm.
Utah dedicated the game in memory of Kara Foster's grandfather, Clifford Foster, who passed away last week. He served in the Air Force in World War II. He was 84.
The Utes face BYU again tomorrow, April 19, in Provo, beginning at 2:00 pm.
