Baseball's Rally Falls Short at New Mexico

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - The University of Utah baseball team plated four runs in the top of the eighth, but its late-game rally fell short as the Utes dropped a 15-8 league game to the New Mexico Lobos here this afternoon.
The Utes (13-20, 3-8 Mountain West) spotted New Mexico a four-run lead after three innings, and they still trailed the Lobos, 10-1 after five. Even though Utah outscored the Lobos, 7-5, the rest of the way, UNM (27-14, 11-4 MWC) still held on for the seven-run win.
Both starting hurlers were the pitchers of record this afternoon. Utah's John James takes the loss in falling to 2-5 on the season. He threw for 4.1 innings, allowing 12 hits, 10 runs (nine earned) and two walks. He whiffed one Lobo batter. UNM's Stephen Smith (4-1) is the winning pitcher.
The teams combined to scatter 30 hits across the field this afternoon, as UNM held the 19-11 edge in that category. Utah only had two batters with multi-hits this afternoon. Cooper Blanc was 3-for-5 with two runs scored and Dustin Hennis was 2-for-4, also with two runs scored.
Cody Guymon plated three of the team's eight RBI. He hit a three-run homer, his third of the year, in the eighth inning. Guymon's three-run shot followed Michael Beltran's RBI single, completing Utah's four-run eighth inning.
Corey Shimada also had a couple RBI on the day. He hit a bases-loaded, two-out single to right field in the sixth, plating two more runs for the Utes. Shimada's at bat followed Nick Kuroczko's effort at the plate. Kuroczko drew a bases-loaded walk.
Utah's other RBI came in the fourth inning. Jesse Shriner followed Hennis' one-out double with a single, plating Hennis.
Six Lobo batters had multi-hit afternoons. They were led by the 4-for-5, three-RBI day of Kevin Atkinson.
Utah returns to the diamond on Tuesday to host in-state rival Southern Utah. First pitch against the T-Birds at Franklin Covey Field is set for 6 p.m.
