COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - Sophomore pitcher Ashley Smuda earned her second Mountain West Conference Pitcher of the Week award this season following a 3-0 week on the mound, the conference announced today.
Smuda entered the first game of a doubleheader against UNLV in the third inning with the Utes down 6-0. She surrendered just one run and two hits in five innings with nine strikeouts to lead Utah to an 8-7 win over the Rebels. Smuda started the second game of the twinbill and went on to strike out seven in the 3-2, complete-game victory. She pitched all eight innings in the second game of a doubleheader vs. then-No. 19 San Diego State, striking out nine. After giving up a run in the first inning, Smuda allowed only one other runner to reach second base the remainder of the game in a 2-1 Ute victory.
Smuda also earned the award back on April 15.
