COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - The Utah softball team had three players named to the Mountain West All-Conference softball team, announced today by the MWC. The team is selected by the league's coaches.
Outfielder Diana Phillips, first baseman Kara Foster and pitcher Ashley Smuda were all named to the 20-member team.
Phillips, a senior, closes out her career ranked in the top-five at Utah in batting average (.360), hits (245), runs (131) and triples (14). She is one of two players selected who has been a four-time all-conference selection. This season, Phillips led the team and was fifth in the conference with a .382 batting average. Her 66 hits was tied for third in the MWC while her .437 on-base percentage, four triples and 21 stolen bases also ranked in the top-10.
Foster finishes the year with 18 home runs, which ranked second in the conference. The sophomore's .781 slugging percentage ranked third in the MWC. She was also in the top-10 in on base percentage (.424), RBI (39) and total bases (121). Foster had 53 hits during the season, over half of which were extra-base hits. She came up with several key hits during the season for the Utes.
Smuda finished the season second in the conference with 18 wins. The sophomore led the MWC with 69 batters struck out looking. She was also in the top five in the conference in ERA (2.76), innings pitched (218.1), games started (35) and appearances (43). Smuda threw two no-hitters during the season (against Southern Utah and UNLV) while leading the Utes to wins against then-No. 14 DePaul, 3-2, a 5-4 victory over then-No. 22 Texas, a 2-1 eight-inning win over then-No. 19 San Diego State and a one-hitter against then-No. 18 San Diego State in a 1-0 win.
Utah finished the season with a 28-27 record overall with a 10-10 record in the MWC to place third in the conference.
