ALBUQUERQUE - Despite a pair of home runs from Kara Foster, the Utah softball team was swept in a doubleheader by New Mexico, 6-2 and 9-1.
After New Mexico took a 1-0 lead in the first inning of game one, the Utes scored in the top of the second. Angie Boardman reached base with a single, as Kelly Matthews went in as a pinch runner. Kristie Keller moved Matthews to second, while Staci Hemingway's single through the left side plated Matthews, tying the game 1-1.
The Lobos continued to hit well, scoring two runs in the bottom of the second and a run in the bottom of the third. A pair of home runs in the fifth inning gave New Mexico a 6-1 lead.
Foster continued her hot streak with a home run in the top of the sixth, starting a rally that continued as Boardman singled through the right side and Kristie Keller reached base on an error. Utah was unable to capitalize as the Lobos forced the next three Ute batters into outs, stranding two on base at the end of the inning.
Diana Phillips, Keller and Boardman each had two hits in the contest. Ashley Smuda pitched five innings and earned the loss before Brittany Parker entered in relief for the final inning.
New Mexico scored four runs in the second inning of game two before Foster hit her second home run of the day in the top of the fifth, cutting the lead to 4-1. Foster has hit four home runs in her last four conference games.
The Lobos tallied five runs in the fifth inning to end the contest. Parker earned the loss in the circle, striking out four.
The sweep ends Utah's bid for winning the Mountain West Conference.
The Utes continue on the road this weekend, taking on Colorado State, Friday, May 9 and Saturday, May 10.
